Wow — I was nervous about posting the wooden bat thing, but I guess I might have spoken out on something that may have been on many of our minds in the first place.I thought I might have been the only one seeming so heartless.

Not that this holds a candle to the New Jersey family’s brain damage, but Jake broke his leg on a giant inflatable slide in summer 2006. Dave and Jake went down the slide together, Dave landed on Jake’s leg at the bottom. It was at the Town of Apex’s July 4th celebration.

Our insurance company made us go to the town and to the inflatable slide rental company for information and then went on to inquire whether we’d attempt to recoup our insurance company’s medical costs.

What? If the insurance company wants their medical costs reimbursed, they could pursue it themselves! I was busy trying to provide a semblance of a summer to my 3 1/2 year old!

It was our choice to allow Jake to go down the slide.

I did write a letter to the slide-rental company because the teenagers hired as attendants did nothing when it was discovered that Jake broke his leg — they continued to let children slide and pile up while we kept those kids from crashing into Jacob. But that was it.

But that did get me thinking about whether the family’s HMO might be putting pressure on them to seek recoupment of some of their expenses…from someone!

PS: A week after Jake’s leg cast came off, he fell off a slide structure at our fitness center’s child care area and cut open his eyebrow, requiring stitches. The insurance company made us go through the same thing again.

Hi friends,

I happened across this story on Foxnews.com this morning. While I’m sympathetic with the family for their tragedy, what will sueing the baseball bat manufacturer, the sporting goods store AND Little League accomplish? I understand they might need some financial assistance for the medical needs the young man has now.

But to sue Little League Baseball? They’re a non-profit organization! And they don’t seem happy about the move afoot to ban “non-wood bats” from play.

I haven’t seen the details of what terms the family will sue for, I guess the family could simply sue for Little League to ban non-wood bats from play?

The parents could have chosen to not allow their son to play Little League if they didn’t feel metal bats are safe. But since they let their son shoot arrows in their basement (see news story linked above), I’m sure a metal bat’s safety didn’t cross their minds preemptively.

While I don’t have a baseball background (neither does Dave, except that he’s a Yankees fan), I try to keep aware of these issues, for I’m sure one day Jake will come home from school and ask, “Mommy and Daddy, may I play [insert name of organized sport here]?” At least, we’re hoping he’ll want to try out something. He’s expressed an interest in ice hockey when we get to Nebraska, and this summer I’ve enrolled him in an ice skating lessons 1-week camp in Cary. We’ll see how he feels about the ice hockey once he’s developed confidence on ice skates.

Caution: Patricia’s opinion follows.

As parents, it is our responsibility to maintain that delicate balance between keeping our kids happy (by letting them do things they want to do) and keeping them safe/well-disciplined/out of trouble (by making those tough decisions on their behalf that might not make the kid happy). So, if you feel a particular organized sport may not be in your child’s best interest, make the decision not to allow for it.

Note: I haven’t had to make a colossally unpopular decision yet, my kids are still young, and I’m not looking forward to the fallout when I might have to tell my kids things like:

“No, you may NOT stay out all night at age 14.” or

“No, I’m NOT buying you a car for your 16th birthday!” or

“No, I’m NOT buying a keg for your 18th birthday party!”

I spend a lot of time pondering whether I’m a good mother or not. Especially with my youngest one, who has a much more “spirited” and “rebellious” personality than his older brother. I think overall they’re pretty good kids, but they’re no angels! I see parenting situations in the news, on Supernanny, and among other parents at parks/malls/grocery stores and I have to admit I’m always gauging: “At least my kids aren’t that bad…” or “Why can’t my kids be that good?”

So, there’s my controversial topic for the day. Go forth and tell me how right/wrong/out in left field you think I am, it’s okay, really.

So one of the things I was looking forward to with my new iPhone was plugging it into our car’s auxiliary port and letting the tunes fly through our car’s stereo speakers.

We had issues with our Motorola Rokrs before because our aux cables were for 3.5 mm jacks, Rokrs needed 2.5 mm jacks. Of course.

I was told iPhones use 3.5mm headphone jacks and there should be no problem plugging it into my vehicle. Yay!

But when I tried to plug in our cable, it turned out the port on the top of the iPhone was “recessed” and the cable wouldn’t plug in all the way.

Isn’t that the way it always goes? You think you’ve got it covered, and then Apple pulls some sort of proprietary trick to make you have to run out and buy a “special” product.

Well I wasn’t going to let Apple get the better of me on this one!

I was at Radio Shack, where I was able to find the iPhone’s iGo tip I needed for my car charger (yay!) and I explained my frustration with the recessed audio-out port. The gentlemen pondered whether I might like to “whittle down” the rubber casing on one end of one of the cables I already have. Heck, what do I have to lose, right?

So last night I gave it a go, and it worked!

After:

Success!

Thanks to the 13 respondents who bravely took my Bikini Line Hair Removal poll.

An overwhelming majority (5 out of 13!) shave. Lucky you!

The rest of the responses had an even spread between plucking and waxing.

PS: See that razor up there? That’s the Gilette Sensor Excel for Women, my favorite since I was in college. I could put in the mens’ Sensor Excel blades, meaning I could buy a 25-pack of blades at my favorite Warehouse Membership Club store for Dave and me to share. I recently left my Sensor Excel at my lodging room at Shaw AFB on a drill weekend and apparently Gilette doesn’t make these anymore for women…just the @#$% Venus if I wanted a semi-permanent razor. So I’m back to Daisy razors from my high school days. Not be confused with the Razor Daisy!

Grey’s Anatomy is my favorite show. Now it’s going to have to struggle to keep my loyalty.

Let’s start here.

I was very very shocked to see them put one of the gay lovers in a no-kidding Army uniform, complete with 2nd Infantry Division unit patch and combat patch (by the way, since there’s a brigade of the 2d ID assigned at Ft. Lewis up the road from the fictitious “Seattle Grace Hospital”).

The other soldier is a patient preparing to undergo a radical brain tumor treatment, and he isn’t in uniform during the episode.

The two share a steamy kiss, which has received all sorts of press already. Let me honest here, homosexual situations in movies, on television, in my life, really truly don’t bug me. One of my favorite shows, Six Feet Under on HBO, had one of the best gay characters on television and it was fascinating to see the character develop. I have several friends/colleagues in my personal and (civilian) professional life who are homosexual and it’s fine.

I don’t judge what’s out there, whether I agree with it or not. We’ll leave it at that.

But to have that guy in a real-looking Army uniform performing homosexual acts gives a very awkward perception to viewers. I don’t agree with that and I was not pleased with seeing that on TV. Homosexual conduct is deemed incompatible with military service. It’s the law. ABC should not have put it’s spin on their opinions of the matter when we’re a nation at war. I don’t know whether it’s really happening in the military now, and if it was happening in my unit/workspace I’d have to take appropriate actions on it. ABC should have left the uniform out of it. Really.

And I’m not the only one with reactions to this. Yes, even an hour after it happened!

I hope AFCYBER don’t come after me for saying these things. I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong.

Okay, this had come up some time ago, but I’m just now getting around to addressing it.

I received a lot of crap regarding my Swimsuit Identity Crisis blog posting. “Why would you want a skirted swimsuit?” “You don’t need to wear something like that.”, etc.

But let’s get to the bottom line.

I’m lazy.

Most of my regulars have met me in person. For those who haven’t met me, you can look to the right and see the picture of me. I have dark hair. I have thick hair. Friends have flatteringly told me about how they’d kill for hair like mine (blush).

But there’s a flip side. Not to gross you out, but consider that beautiful lush dark thick hair translated to my legs, armpits…and, ahem, other areas.

Back in the 50s and 60s, the term was “defuzzing”. How dainty, delicate. Ugh.

My Chinese Mom doesn’t even have to shave her legs at all (seriously, you can’t see a thing!). I think she was quite appalled at the jungle that erupted on my legs when I was 11-12 years old.

Ever met a girl with 5 ‘o clock shadow on her LEGS?

Anyway, one of the corollary reasons for wanting a skirted swimsuit was that I could avoid the whole shaving/waxing/plucking of the bikini line. I tried the boy-short suit one season, that was okay, but the skirt seemed prettier.

Ultimately it was Dave who convinced me to skip the skirt-thing altogether this year, and I selected this suit, tankini top and bikini bottom, both in the Geo Dot pattern, from Athleta.

(Notice how much larger the picture of the bottom is here — that’s about how I had to buy these, really!)
So I’m back to the summer routine of waxing and plucking. Shaving doesn’t cut it (no pun intended).

If you dare, check out the latest poll…it’s a wild one, don’t worry, it’s anonymous! Men, feel free to reply, there’s an option for you too!

Me: “I want an iPhone.”

Dave: “How can you be such a slave to technology?”

Me: “It’s cool and it takes care of many of the things I want to do in today’s wireless world. After all, my current cell phone is on the brink of death and if I lose it, I not only lose my phone, but also my MP3 player. So we can replace both the phone and MP3 player, or get it all-in-one with an iPhone!”

Dave: “It’s Skynet — it’s coming!”

I’ve already been to our local Apple store where they have banks of them with which you can log in to your own e-mail accounts and send messages, make phone calls, you can take photos/videos and you can surf the web. I thoroughly enjoyed playing with them, as did my boys, who immediately asked me to bring up the Peanut Butter Jelly video on You Tube!

Dave showed me this cartoon, which is pretty funny, but does a good job bringing to light one of my fears of getting a full-priced phone. I’ve been pretty brutal on my cell phones. I’d need to get insurance and one of those super-armored “skins” to protect it.

Since we have that IRS Economic Stimulus money coming to us later this month, and President Bush wants us to spend more money, I’m thinking our opportunity for me to get an iPhone couldn’t be better!

A valid concern I do have about having this iPhone is the, um, URGE I’ll have to want to be on the web all the time. Might I be trying to write e-mails at traffic lights? Or worse yet, while I’m cruising down I-40??? Do other people do that?

We’ll see whether I get one or not. So far I’m not completely sold, but I’m about 80% there.

Hi!

Today I finally got up the nerve to submit a local gas price to the Raleigh Gas Prices website. I figured I’ve been using the site so much, and the station right outside of my neighborhood’s entrance (it has a single entry/exit, more on that for another posting) is hideously expensive, I thought I’d get an account and start reporting what I see.

For those geography geeks, here is a cool map of gas prices across the U.S. Note the local minimum in South Carolina — I make a point of filling up in McColl, SC, where I usually cross the state line when driving down to Shaw AFB for drill. Further down on the page is a map of North Carolina, but you can enter any city/state or zip code and look at more localized price information.

“So how did you do on your grand experiment?”

Yes, I was just getting to that…

In case you were wondering, here’s a description of the experiment. Unfortunately, Dave and I took a temporary hiatus from the single-vehicle experiment during my drill last weekend, plus this week we had several occasions to use separate vehicles. I’d like to return to the schedule next week, but we’ll see. I will be watching a friends’ kids on Wednesday, so I’d definitely need the van to fit 4 little boys in their booster seats!

We were able to drive the van a limited amount on ONE tank of gas from March 8th through April 1st. The Prius cost us $25-30 to fill up about every 6 days. So we used about 4 tanks of gas in the Prius. Typically we spend $250-275 per month on gas, in the time period in question, we were able to spend only about $150 for gas. A nice cost savings, I must say! We put about 1000 miles on the Prius in that time frame. That took into account a round trip to Pope AFB (120 miles total) and one round trip to Dalzell, SC, about 400 miles total.

Overall, it was a cool thing to try out for a solid month, but in practice, we simply live too far away for it to work while we’re still in NC. Maybe it can become our lifestyle in NE this fall, we’ll see. The Prius was getting about 18 extra miles on it daily since it had to make two trips to campus instead of just the one, and the time the boys and I had to take every evening to pick up Dave could be better spent than sitting in the car.

But – if gas prices continue to climb, this is something I’m willing to make the time for 2-3 times per week, provided Dave isn’t driving anywhere during the day.

Thanks everyone for your comments/advice. We are definitely a “toaster oven” family, I don’t think we’ve owned a standard toaster in our 12 1/2 years of marriage. Don’t know why — I think it’s because we received a great toaster oven from Dave’s parents the first Christmas after we got married (1995) and it’s just seemed crazy to me to have both a toaster oven and a standard toaster. That first toaster oven lasted until we sold out FL house in 2005 and the unit was hard mounted under a kitchen cabinet and figured the new owners might like it there.

Dave got a good deal on the same toaster oven at Linens ‘n Things, so he bought it while I was in VA visiting my Mom with the boys.

At our yard sale on April 20th, some lucky soul will get to buy a very good condition toaster oven without a rack for $2 OBO.

Hi!

Oops, I did it again. I committed a brain fart and now I’m in need of a replacement RACK for our toaster oven. I popped in these little dessert h’or deurves the other night and the directions said they could bake in these little plastic “oven proof” trays that came with the dessert. Well I put the oven on about 100 degrees too hot and the pan melted all over the rack. So the rack is in the trash and I’m in need of the new one.

We really like our toaster oven, but for now I have to tell the boys, “No frozen waffles, bagels, English muffins or toast for breakfast.” I’ve been searching searching searching on the web for a replacement rack and so far, no luck.

Black and Decker makes a billion different kinds of toaster ovens and I can’t seem to find a replacement for my particular model.

And before you ask, no, I’d rather not just run to the store and get a new toaster or toaster oven. The one we have is pretty new (less than 2 years old) and we’re feverishly trying to get rid of stuff in advance of our move, so getting a new toaster would defeat the purpose…

So if anyone is more astute than me at finding a replacement oven rack for a B&D TRO390W, please let me know. Leave a comment!
