Part of why you guys saw a series of posts about Magic Rocks was because the Raleigh area was under smoke from the “Evans Road” wildfire. The fires are originating near the east coast of NC and today’s easterly winds brought the smoke plume RIGHT OVER Raleigh.
It was definitely hazy, with visibility down to 1/2 mile at the Raleigh Airport this afternoon. You could also distinctly smell the smoke today. I made sure to keep the boys inside today, where our A/C did a good job of keeping the air clean.

The fires are nowhere near contained as of this writing, and best of luck to those who are working hard to keep it under control.

I have started watching “Weeds” on Showtime.

I seem to be attracted to these twisted shows that have a hint of black humor. Since “Six Feet Under” finished on HBO a couple years ago, there’s been some close ones (Nip/Tuck on FX), but nothing close till I caught my first full episode of Weeds a couple weeks ago.

But it wasn’t till tonight, while I was watching 3 episodes in a row, that I realized a different artist sings a cover the theme song, Malvina Reynolds’ “Little Boxes”. As some have attested, it’s definitely a way to keep someone in today’s Tivo/DVR world from fast forwarding through the opening credits.

Dave was sitting on the couch across the living room from me working on his defense presentation slide show, when tonight’s last episode started and he asked from behind his laptop screen, “Is that Laurie Berkner singing the theme song?”

Laurie Berkner? Timmy’s favorite singer?

After all, “I’m Gonna Catch You” is his anthem…

NAAAAH! She sings CHILDREN’S SONGS!

Right?

After some Google-sleuthing, it turned out Dave is right! He’s very gifted at figuring out voices…you should see him work our kids’ animated movies!

The song is actually very cute, remove it from the show and it would sit perfectly on one of her CDs…really!

We’re back at it again…it’s been a personal mission for me to get the water flowing at a bare minimum while still giving the kids the slippery surface.

I think a lightly misting sprayer hose at the top at a bare minimum with misting sprinkler in the middle is our winner.

Hi again!

Eventually I’ll get around to writing about what’s REALLY going on in my life: keeping the boys happy, planning our trip to Nebraska, and keeping all of the contractors working on our house straight. Today should be a relatively relaxing day — the termite treatment is done, the remnants of our home inspection work is now scheduled, and I’ve found a preschool for Timmy in Nebraska!

But for now, allow me to introduce you to Sharon O’Donnell of Cary, NC, who apparently has become famous for her new book “House of Testosterone” about being a Mom of 3 boys.

I saw the website named on a bumper sticker in Apex last week, so yesterday I remembered to check it out. When I noticed all of Ms. O’Donnell’s book readings were in central N.C., I checked further to find out she lives in the next town over from me. Cool!

Many of my blog “regulars” are Moms of boys (Maryann, Wendy, Deidre, Dawn, Mandakini, Robin, Christina): our scrapbooking/sewing/stamping/needlepoint areas have been usurped by toy trains, race tracks, acres of Army men, and Legos Legos Legos! Thought you might enjoy this!

Ta!

This week was graduation week at my boys’ preschool. I attended Timmy’s end-of-year picnic on Tuesday by myself, as Jake was in class and Dave was in Nebraska getting us a house. I didn’t get many good pictures of Timmy, he was being too crazy.

Jacob’s ceremony, on the other hand, was way more emotional. I wanted to share pictures of Jacob’s graduation and a little trip down memory lane.

I guess great minds think alike, because while I was drafting this, Maryann shared with me this post.

Here he is graduating from the Ducks, his 4-year-old class, May 21, 2007:

And from the Penguins, his pre-Kindergarten class, May 22, 2008:

Here are more photos from Jake’s ceremony:

Wow — I was nervous about posting the wooden bat thing, but I guess I might have spoken out on something that may have been on many of our minds in the first place.I thought I might have been the only one seeming so heartless.

Not that this holds a candle to the New Jersey family’s brain damage, but Jake broke his leg on a giant inflatable slide in summer 2006. Dave and Jake went down the slide together, Dave landed on Jake’s leg at the bottom. It was at the Town of Apex’s July 4th celebration.

Our insurance company made us go to the town and to the inflatable slide rental company for information and then went on to inquire whether we’d attempt to recoup our insurance company’s medical costs.

What? If the insurance company wants their medical costs reimbursed, they could pursue it themselves! I was busy trying to provide a semblance of a summer to my 3 1/2 year old!

It was our choice to allow Jake to go down the slide.

I did write a letter to the slide-rental company because the teenagers hired as attendants did nothing when it was discovered that Jake broke his leg — they continued to let children slide and pile up while we kept those kids from crashing into Jacob. But that was it.

But that did get me thinking about whether the family’s HMO might be putting pressure on them to seek recoupment of some of their expenses…from someone!

PS: A week after Jake’s leg cast came off, he fell off a slide structure at our fitness center’s child care area and cut open his eyebrow, requiring stitches. The insurance company made us go through the same thing again.

Hi friends,

I happened across this story on Foxnews.com this morning. While I’m sympathetic with the family for their tragedy, what will sueing the baseball bat manufacturer, the sporting goods store AND Little League accomplish? I understand they might need some financial assistance for the medical needs the young man has now.

But to sue Little League Baseball? They’re a non-profit organization! And they don’t seem happy about the move afoot to ban “non-wood bats” from play.

I haven’t seen the details of what terms the family will sue for, I guess the family could simply sue for Little League to ban non-wood bats from play?

The parents could have chosen to not allow their son to play Little League if they didn’t feel metal bats are safe. But since they let their son shoot arrows in their basement (see news story linked above), I’m sure a metal bat’s safety didn’t cross their minds preemptively.

While I don’t have a baseball background (neither does Dave, except that he’s a Yankees fan), I try to keep aware of these issues, for I’m sure one day Jake will come home from school and ask, “Mommy and Daddy, may I play [insert name of organized sport here]?” At least, we’re hoping he’ll want to try out something. He’s expressed an interest in ice hockey when we get to Nebraska, and this summer I’ve enrolled him in an ice skating lessons 1-week camp in Cary. We’ll see how he feels about the ice hockey once he’s developed confidence on ice skates.

Caution: Patricia’s opinion follows.

As parents, it is our responsibility to maintain that delicate balance between keeping our kids happy (by letting them do things they want to do) and keeping them safe/well-disciplined/out of trouble (by making those tough decisions on their behalf that might not make the kid happy). So, if you feel a particular organized sport may not be in your child’s best interest, make the decision not to allow for it.

Note: I haven’t had to make a colossally unpopular decision yet, my kids are still young, and I’m not looking forward to the fallout when I might have to tell my kids things like:

“No, you may NOT stay out all night at age 14.” or

“No, I’m NOT buying you a car for your 16th birthday!” or

“No, I’m NOT buying a keg for your 18th birthday party!”

I spend a lot of time pondering whether I’m a good mother or not. Especially with my youngest one, who has a much more “spirited” and “rebellious” personality than his older brother. I think overall they’re pretty good kids, but they’re no angels! I see parenting situations in the news, on Supernanny, and among other parents at parks/malls/grocery stores and I have to admit I’m always gauging: “At least my kids aren’t that bad…” or “Why can’t my kids be that good?”

So, there’s my controversial topic for the day. Go forth and tell me how right/wrong/out in left field you think I am, it’s okay, really.

Greetings from South Carolina again!

For the first time, I brought Timmy with me on a drill weekend to South Carolina.

Dave and Jacob are with a group of Pennsy N-Scale Model Railroaders in Central PA, folks he’s had many conversations with via his Railwire discussion group. In fact, here’s a post discussing what these guys were up to today, with special mention of Dave making the trip up from NC.

While Dave had kindly offered to take Timmy along on the trip also, we both realized that even if both boys were angels together this weekend, having Timmy along with have been more work. He needs help going potty, cleaning up after meals, etc.

In the brief conversations I’ve had with Dave, this weekend has been fantastic for him. He said it was like the train vacation I’d been encouraging him to take for a couple years now.

Dave and Jacob had dibbs on the Prius, DVD player AND the GPS for this trip. I guess they deserved it since they drove twice as far, huh?

Back to drilling with Timmy. When I was working for Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, VA, I routinely took Timmy (and Jacob) with me on drill weekends. My Mom would watch the boys while I worked, and it wasn’t so traumatic for the boys to not have to see me for 8-10 hours per day, instead of missing me for 48 hours straight.

Last week I asked a couple of the full-timers in my unit to inquire about babysitters for the weekend. Younger Airmen would suffice, although I would prefer a teenager to whom I would feel more comfortable paying an hourly wage.

So a Master Sergeant in my unit has a teenaged daughter who kindly offered up her weekend to take Timmy at their house, where her father and 4 siblings were also to be home. Based on my meeting the kids before, and stories of what great times all the flight member’s kids have at their house, I felt trustworthy enough to bring Timmy with me this weekend and give it a go.

Friday night I met up with the family at Sumter’s local hotspot: Chuck E. Cheese. Addie (short for Adeline) immediately took charge of Timmy and let me tell you, my son was in LOVE! She taught him how to play Skee Ball, helped him accumulate his tickets on that and many of the other games, then showed him how to cash in the tickets for prizes.

So this morning we switched off Timmy at a midway point between the base and Addie’s house and Timmy took off running with barely a “goodbye!”. I guess that’s a good thing, right?

I was able to have a pretty productive day at work.

This afternoon, the active duty weather squadron had their annual spring picnic; we reservists were cordially invited, which was very kind of them. The gang Timmy was staying with today all came in around 3pm, Timmy arrived quite exhausted from playing all day with his new friends, but after a meal of a couple bites of hot dog and a ton of potato chips, he was off and running again. Playing in a bouncy castle, blowing bubbles, running in circles, etc. He and one of his new friends enjoyed pretending the sand in the volleyball pit was a beach and the sand was “water” in which they “swam”.

Translation: What a mess!

He even got involved in a game of kiddie tug-of-war. But when I saw Chief Tinglehoff helping his 3-year-old daughter’s side, I jumped in and helped Timmy’s side! I think there were pictures taken of that little disaster, we’ll have to see what ensues when they get posted.

Timmy was very friendly to everyone most of the afternoon, and I received many nice compliments of what a friendly, cute kid Timmy is.

This is MY SON? Wow, I was very flattered.

By the time Timmy and I returned to our on-base lodging room this evening (8pm), all his exposed skin was caked in sand, dirt, Kool-Aid, potato chip crumbs, melted chocolate chips, Cheeto residue and Skittles food-coloring. As soon as we walked in, I had him halt in his tracks and strip down. Straight into the tub he went!

He was quickly bathed and bedded. He was asleep by 8:45pm.

Phew!

I’m stoopid tired again.

It started with another yard sale this morning. So once again I was up at 6am on a Saturday. It was lousy this time around: $20 in 3 hours. Compared to $300+ in 6 hours last Saturday. We ended up giving away our two largest items — Dave’s old model train layout benchwork and a La-z-Boy recliner, since they went to people we knew. I guess my double Baby Jogger’s goin’ on Craig’s List this week.

At 10:45am we took the boys to a birthday party at one of those bouncy-house centers, got them there a little after 11am, where the Bucklers (their daughter was also a guest at the party) kept the boys while Dave and I took off for…

Well, Dave did most of the drinking. He behaved very well, I’m proud of him! I enjoyed some tastes for the first 90 minutes or so…over 100 beers to taste! I was definitely most impressed with the Warsteiner flavored malt liquors. The lemon flavored “mix” tasted like Mountain Dew with a kick! Yum! I’m not as much a beer girl so I was okay wrapping things up early on so I could drive Dave home.

Got to enjoy some fried dill pickles! A distinctly North Carolina thing…

It was a great time, except for when I was buzzed I charged right into a porta-potty and went potty before realizing there was no toilet tissue! EEEWWW!

I did come out of there with a cool Blue Ridge Brewing Co. t-shirt featuring this pic of their Hurricane Hefeweizen label, which I thought was neat.

After a yummy fried seafood dinner with the boys, and the boys went to bed, I tackled cleaning closets. Stuffing linens and clothing into Space Bags and hauling them down into our near-cleaned out garage shelves. Just now finished. My closet looks pretty darned good now. Let’s hope potential home buyers think the same thing.

Tomorrow? Mowing the lawn, shampooing carpets, grocery shopping and helping Dave package up his model train layout to store it while the house is on the market.

Okay — while I was writing up this post, I must have downed about 10 Hershey’s Cookies & Cream Kisses. Oh so yummy in my tummy, but I must stop now!

Paul did it again! He’s pointed out some crazy website to me and I’m now addicted.

NOTE: My affinity for The Pioneer Woman’s site is all his fault!

Presenting: the Do-It-Yourself Demotivational Poster Generator

Dave and I have always gotten a kick out of those motivational posters, such as this one:

But we get MORE of a kick out of the parodies on the motivational posters. This one was framed in Dave’s office in Florida.

Sure, folks have tried to make up their own, and you get something like this one below, which is from the USJFCOM Joint Warfighting Center in Suffolk, VA. Framed, hanging up on the wall. I couldn’t even go into this room with a straight face. I did a lot of Reserve work in the room with this poster in 2006 and 2007. There was a series of posters featuring different facets of military capability: “Intelligence”, “Operations”, “Logistics”. While I’m honored that someone thought to include “Meterology”, I wish someone had consulted a spell-checker first.

I didn’t add that Post-It note, someone else did:

With the link I’ve shown above, you can upload a picture of your choice, then add your own title and catch-phrase. Then you can e-mail the poster to friends, save a JPG of the poster to your hard drive, and you can even order an 11 x 14 of the poster for about $12!

Enjoy my latest creations.

Feel free to try it out and let me know if you come up with any particularly good ones!
Here’s a link to the company that markets the REAL motivation posters, if you’re wanting to learn more about the real thing: Successories.
