Greece 2025 Day 2: Mt. Olympus National Park

At one of the scenic overlooks on the road towards the trailhead. You can see the rain showers behind us.

Today Dave and I drove out of the city to Mt. Olympus National Park, about 90 minutes from Thessaloniki: you need to go northwest, then southwest around the northern end of the Thermaic Gulf (north end of the Aegean Sea).

Greece 2025 Day 2: On the Drive to Mt. Olympus National Park

I’ll write more about our hike in Mt Olympus National Park later on, but Dave and I have really enjoyed playing the “license plate game” here in Eastern Europe. This was at a rest stop on Route 1 , the main highway between Thessaloniki and Athens. Lots of cars from Serbia, Bulgaria, and Ukraine on … Read more

Greece 2025 Day 1: A Fun Filled First Day

We had a fun first full day in Greece today!

We picked up the kids on campus, then visited the nearby IKEA for a late breakfast and picked up groceries at Lidl.
Then we headed out to a lovely beach down the coast from Thessaloniki, near a town called Lea Irakleia. We enjoyed driving through the olive groves, vineyards, and pomegranate orchards to get there.

We finished with an early dinner at a restaurant in the town of Thermi called “??? ?????” or “GRN Thermi”: gyros and souvlaki.

UK 2024: The London AirBnB

The main living space. It wasn’t huge, but much bigger than a hotel room.

Story time! I promised a bit about our AirBnB…I had to wait to go into detail until we resolved an issue. It’s been resolved to our satisfaction, so here we go!

UK 2024: Some Funny Pictures

Welsh: “wet floor hazard, cleaning in progress”

Enjoy a sampling of some of the fun signs and foods I saw on our trip. The list of sodas is from the menu at a McDonalds in Exeter. Note there’s only one soda option that isn’t “Zero”. I was intrigued that even the sodas with sugar actually still have some artificial sweetener of some sort in it to keep the calories and sugars down.

UK 2024: Greenwich and the Prime Meridian

It’s really hard to read, but there’s an engraving right above the white slab that says “Greenwich Meridian Line” with the words “East Longitude” on the left, and “West Longitude” on the right.

Greenwich, the home of the Royal Observatory.

We arrived rather late, with only 90 minutes until we’d have to catch the last City Cruises boat back towards central London. There was only one thing I wanted to do in Greenwich: stand on the Prime Meridian. The map geek in me was thrilled to be able to put one foot in each hemisphere for a few photos. (Having taught cartography before, I fully understand how arbitrary and Imperialist the line is, but I digress.)
