Greece 2025 Day 2: Mt. Olympus National Park

At one of the scenic overlooks on the road towards the trailhead. You can see the rain showers behind us.

Today Dave and I drove out of the city to Mt. Olympus National Park, about 90 minutes from Thessaloniki: you need to go northwest, then southwest around the northern end of the Thermaic Gulf (north end of the Aegean Sea).

We started at a visitor center/museum that offered a lovely background and history of the parks (including the mythological connections). Then we drove 15 km into the park via this ravine road to a trailhead/rest area. From there we hiked a lovely trail that reminded me of the Appalachian Trail near the Delaware Water Gap!

There were thunderstorms around so we didn’t hike terribly long: but we made it to some pretty waterfalls. The irony of the thunder at Mt. Olympus is not lost on us at all! It was as if Zeus himself was greeting us!

The traffic was pretty crazy in Thessaloniki — we had to travel the full length of the city in both directions, hence my references to driving in Seoul. But it was a lovely windshield tour of Thessaloniki just the same.

After our hike we had a lunch of lamb stew.

Water fountain!
So much traffic! You can see the White Tower of Thessaloniki off in the distance.

Grateful for Apple CarPlay in our rental vehicle. It helped with the wandering around Greece.
