After a pizza lunch on Sunday, we attempted to drive out to see a shipwreck just offshore along a beach south of Thessaloniki. The beach was called Potamos Epanomis Beach or the Epanomis Sand Dunes.
We never made it to the shipwreck. We failed to consider that in Greece, on Sundays, in the summer, ALL of Eastern Europe goes to the beach and the final two kilometers of the drive would be navigating makeshift parking lots in the soft sand. It was pretty terrible. But we got to play more of the License Plate Game.
Instead we walked around the eastern part of the beach some and made our way back to town. We then bid farewell to Tim and Maddie. We had a very very early flight out of Thessaloniki the next morning. Tim will be home in just a month

We started Sunday with a walking tour of the Perrotis College campus, which has numerous educational gardens and tree groves. I thoroughly enjoyed walking among the olive, pomegranate, fig, persimmon, and almond trees…and all the grape vines.

Saturday’s adventure: a tall ship boat ride to beaches around the Halkidiki Peninsulas. The title of this tour was “Halkidiki Blue Lagoon Cruise On A Pirate Boat From Thessaloniki”.

Friday night in Thessaloniki!
After Mt. Olympus we met up with the kids and they taught us how to navigate the bus system to go towards the city center where we enjoyed a sunset seafood dinner on the waterfront.
Then we took a stroll through Aristotelous Square where we got our dessert — everything in the bakery was so beautiful and looked so delicious it was tough to decide what to get. Dave and I chose walnut baklava.

Today Dave and I drove out of the city to Mt. Olympus National Park, about 90 minutes from Thessaloniki: you need to go northwest, then southwest around the northern end of the Thermaic Gulf (north end of the Aegean Sea).
I’ll write more about our hike in Mt Olympus National Park later on, but Dave and I have really enjoyed playing the “license plate game” here in Eastern Europe. This was at a rest stop on Route 1 , the main highway between Thessaloniki and Athens. Lots of cars from Serbia, Bulgaria, and Ukraine on … Read more
We had a fun first full day in Greece today!
We picked up the kids on campus, then visited the nearby IKEA for a late breakfast and picked up groceries at Lidl.
Then we headed out to a lovely beach down the coast from Thessaloniki, near a town called Lea Irakleia. We enjoyed driving through the olive groves, vineyards, and pomegranate orchards to get there.
We finished with an early dinner at a restaurant in the town of Thermi called “??? ?????” or “GRN Thermi”: gyros and souvlaki.
We got to our AirBnB at about 1am last night and crashed hard! Woke up to this lovely view, though…I could sit here all day and just stare at the water Heading over soon to pick up Tim from his dorm — he was charged with finding us a beach to hang out at this … Read more
