This morning Dave and I took a guided tour of the remnants of the Dachau Concentration Camp just outside Munich. This is the only picture I feel like sharing…the tour and museum were both very comprehensive and very very raw.
We had tried to do a Dachau tour with the boys in 2020 (COVID canceled), and then again tried to fit it in as part of our 2022 trip. I’m not sure this would have been a good idea especially for Tim in 2020…maybe in 2022? Parts of the museum are prohibited for children under age 12.
This tour also got me in the feels in that this site struck some parallels to the Ameche Internment Camp Museum currently being built up in southeastern CO. You can really feel the desolation — neither trees nor natural sources of water inside the perimeter — while standing there. The foundations for all of the buildings are still present…they have reconstructed a couple of the buildings for educational purposes.
I’m humbled to have seen this incredibly uncomfortable part of human history. The more we learn about it, the more we can resist repeating it.
