RAILFANNING PRR'S JUNIATA DIVISION IN JULY, 1956

Chasing trains on the PRR's Juniata Division in the summer of 1956...  This was the last full year of steam operations on PRR.  Many consider the 1950s to be the PRR's last good years.  By 1968, Penn Central would take over Juniata Division operations, and eventually so would Conrail in 1976.  Click each image to enlarge.  Check back often for updates.

The first shot of the day catches an M1 4-8-2 in charge of a string of empty hoppers running westbound, eventually bound for the mines north of Cresson. On the eastbound track is a local pulled by H10sb #8756.

We catch up to M1 #6811 again at Jack's Run (below):

Waiting a few minutes we're rewarded by the arrival of TT2, the eastbound TrucTrain behind a matched set of GP9s (PRR class EFS17m).

TT2, normally a hotshot, must have been held up somewhere along the line, because we were able to make it eastward to Lewisport in time to see her blasting through town.

TT2 clears LEW Interlocking as a PRR class L1s 2-8-2 running cabin light gets a clear signal to run westbound through LEW.

The next day, westbound Train 33, the St Louisan, passes an eastbound symbol freight at M Interlocking in East Mifflin, PA.

Train 33 leans into the curve through the cut and flies over US522 behind PRR Class EP-22 #5890 (an EMD E8A).

The westbound St Louisan pulls away from its station stop as a matched set of ALCO Class AF-15 (FA/B1) freight cabs roll to a stop with a mixed freight.

A close-up of the ALCOs waiting for a clear signal through LEW Interlocking to continue east to Enola yard.

As the mainlines clear for the moment, we have a chance to view H10sb 2-8-0 #8756 switch a PRR X29 Merchandise Service boxcar at the Lewisport freight station.

A Pennsy L1s on the Lewisport local sorts cars for Lewisport's freight station and the Juniata Machine Tool Company.

A parting shot... ...a gathering of Pennsy steam. All were kitbashed from chassis and parts from other engines. Left to right: H10sb #8756, L1s #762, and M1 #6811.
