RAILFANNING CONRAIL'S JUNIATA DIVISION IN JULY, 1980

Chasing trains on Conrail's Juniata Division in the summer of 1980...  Conrail was still heavily subsidized by the government at this time, and many vestiges of CR's pre-merger ancestor roads were still evident.  However, Conrail was moving steadily toward the lean, profitable machine it would eventually become.  Click on each image to enlarge.  Check back often as I expand my Conrail operations.

Up first we find GP38-2 #8097 crossing Jack's Run with a local freight as a coal drag passes in the other direction.

The Lewisport local approaches CP East Mifflin (former PRR M Interlocking).

GP38-2 #8097 leans into the curve approaching the US522 overpass.

Another meet at the tunnel just beyond Lewisport.

A rare sight indeed; a single ex-PC SD35 hauls a coal drag through CP Lew, taking advantage of the Juniata Division's lack of grades.  Ordinarily a pair of SDs would do the honor.

A Conrail doubleheader rolls through CP LEW.

Behind the GP38-2 we find year-old GP15-1 number 1656.

With bells clanging, an ex-PC SD35 is seen crossing PA Route 45 with a coal drag while traffic waits patiently.
