{"id":572,"date":"2011-05-22T22:55:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-22T22:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/05\/thoughts-on-corn.html"},"modified":"2011-05-22T22:55:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-22T22:55:00","slug":"thoughts-on-corn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/05\/thoughts-on-corn.html","title":{"rendered":"Thoughts on Corn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Corn&#8217;s been in my mind a lot this week.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;Yeah, being in Nebraska will do that to you&#8230;.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cdn1.sbnation.com\/community_logos\/13364\/corn-xl.png\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn1.sbnation.com\/community_logos\/13364\/corn-xl.png\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>As I was saying, some corn-related items have surfaced these past few days, not just from being here, but I guess in general.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Corn thought #1:<\/i><\/b> In Florida, local corn harvests are in full swing, with our local <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publix.com\/\">Publix<\/a> grocery store offering yellow, white and bi-color corn from a farm in <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=belle+glade,+fl&amp;sll=26.848579,-80.510559&amp;sspn=1.161527,2.466431&amp;gl=us&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Belle+Glade,+Palm+Beach,+Florida&amp;ll=26.684275,-80.667114&amp;spn=1.163208,2.466431&amp;t=h&amp;z=9\">Belle Glade, FL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so that isn&#8217;t super local. &nbsp;I realized that <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=d&amp;source=s_d&amp;saddr=Gulf+Breeze-Harold,+FL+32566&amp;daddr=houston,tx&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FSCZzwEdgJvS-ilN94l2fB6RiDGPeyvFvARIyg%3BFUQlxgEd6pFQ-ikBhY1ItLhAhjE7BWXz3gINyg&amp;mra=ls&amp;sll=30.427571,-86.907457&amp;sspn=0.00877,0.019269&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;t=h&amp;z=7\">I could drive to Houston<\/a> in less time than it would take me to <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=d&amp;source=s_d&amp;saddr=Gulf+Breeze-Harold,+FL+32566&amp;daddr=Belle+Glade,+FL&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=FSCZzwEdgJvS-ilN94l2fB6RiDGPeyvFvARIyg%3BFV4slwEdWhwx-yklngEafVDZiDEgp2Qt_N0HBw&amp;mra=ls&amp;sll=30.2265,-91.12187&amp;sspn=4.498565,9.865723&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;ll=28.719496,-83.781738&amp;spn=4.566059,9.865723&amp;t=h&amp;z=7\">drive to Belle Glade,<\/a> which is west of West Palm Beach along Lake Okeechobee.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been great having fresh corn available to us for as little as 10 cents per ear! <\/p>\n<p><b><i>Corn thought #2:<\/i><\/b> This week <a href=\"http:\/\/thepioneerwoman.com\/cooking\/\">The Pioneer Woman<\/a> held another Kitchen Aid Mixer giveaway, and she randomly selects the winners from the folks who answer simple questions in her comments section. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/thepioneerwoman.com\/cooking\/2011\/05\/in-deep\/\">Here&#8217;s the giveaway post, and you can see how many comments it generated<\/a>. &nbsp;Yep, you read right&#8230;over 51,000 comments! &nbsp;The question was &#8220;What&#8217;s your absolute favorite vegetable?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepioneerwoman.com\/cooking\/2011\/05\/mixer-wieners-2\/\">The following day, she not only posted the randomly-selected winner<\/a>, but she also offered the statistical distribution of what answers she received. &nbsp;Number one on the list? &nbsp;Corn!<\/p>\n<p>Potatoes were #5 on the list, and I don&#8217;t agree with that one either.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, when Nebraska corn was available at roadside stands, I had set up a quickie poll to ask about whether corn should be treated as a starch or a vegetable at the dinner table. &nbsp;My family&#8217;s inclination is to use it as a starch, although I know that school cafeterias and 2\/3 of my poll respondents treat corn as a vegetable. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/2010\/08\/corn-debate-starch-or-veggie.html\">I wrote up the results, along with a ranting about Florida corn being available at my local Eastern Nebraska Wal Mart (and how stupid that seemed).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think I&#8217;m going to present that poll again&#8230;I have a pretty wide range of readers now. &nbsp;Look to the right of the ORIGINAL blog post (it won&#8217;t work if you&#8217;re viewing this on Facebook or via RSS\/e-mail) and answer my non-scientific poll question!<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Corn thought #3:<\/i><\/b> Enjoy a picture the gift I bought for my boys today at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stamchocolate.com\/\">Chocolaterie Stam<\/a> in Papillion, NE. &nbsp;They&#8217;re filled with a hazelnut chocolate creme&#8230;yum! &nbsp;These chocolates give props to the first American Chocolaterie Stam store in Des Moines, IA. &nbsp;Jacob asked me to bring some of these back from Nebraska for him.<\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Mfl9KoSoAkE\/TdmMRmvXTdI\/AAAAAAABV_Y\/hgdmbX3uNGs\/s1600\/IMG_4797.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Mfl9KoSoAkE\/TdmMRmvXTdI\/AAAAAAABV_Y\/hgdmbX3uNGs\/s400\/IMG_4797.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Aren&#8217;t they cute?
