Or was it New Mexico?<\/p>\n<p>**********************************************************************************<br \/>What is a Military Wife?*<br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">By Jane Hubbard Hyde<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A Military wife can be tough to describe.<\/p>\n<p>She is a southern belle, a northeastern mets fan, a California 3rd generation re-cycler, a Pacific Islander.<\/p>\n<p>She is short or tall<\/p>\n<p>a tomboy<\/p>\n<p>a fashion diva<\/p>\n<p>a physician&#8217;s assistant<\/p>\n<p>a Republican<\/p>\n<p>a Democrat (yes, even THAT!)<\/p>\n<p>A Military Wife is a career gal<\/p>\n<p>a home-schooler<\/p>\n<p>a scrap-booker<\/p>\n<p>an accomplished cellist<\/p>\n<p>an auto mechanic<\/p>\n<p>What is a MILITARY Wife?<\/p>\n<p>They may look different and each is wonderfully unique<\/p>\n<p>But this they have in common.<\/p>\n<p>lots of moving&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>moving, moving, moving far from home<\/p>\n<p>moving two cars, three kids and one dog&#8212;-all riding with HER of course<\/p>\n<p>moving sofas to basements because they won&#8217;t go in THIS house<\/p>\n<p>moving curtains that won&#8217;t fit<\/p>\n<p>moving jobs and certifications and professional development hours<\/p>\n<p>moving away from friends moving toward new friends<\/p>\n<p>moving her most important luggage; her trunkful of memories<\/p>\n<p>often waiting-<\/p>\n<p>waiting, waiting, waiting for housing; waiting for orders; waiting<br \/>for deployment; waiting for reunion; waiting for phones calls;<br \/>waiting for the new curtains to arrive; waiting for him to come home<br \/>for dinner&#8212;-AGAIN!<\/p>\n<p>They call her &#8220;military dependent&#8221;, but she knows better<\/p>\n<p>she can balance a checkbook<\/p>\n<p>handle the yard work<\/p>\n<p>fix a noisy toilet.<\/p>\n<p>She is intimately familiar with drywall anchors, and toggle bolts.<\/p>\n<p>She can file the taxes, sell a house, buy a car, or set up a move, &#8212;<br \/>&#8211;all with ONE Power of Attorney.<\/p>\n<p>She welcomes neighbors that don&#8217;t welcome her.<\/p>\n<p>Reinvents her career with every PCS; locates a house in the desert,<br \/>the arctic, or the deep south and learns to call them all &#8220;home&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She MAKES them all home.<\/p>\n<p>She is fiercely IN-dependent<\/p>\n<p>Military Wives are somewhat hasty<\/p>\n<p>They leap into decorating, leadership, volunteering, career<br \/>alternatives, churches and friendships.<\/p>\n<p>They don&#8217;t have 15 years to get to know people.<\/p>\n<p>Their roots are short but flexible.<\/p>\n<p>They plant annuals for themselves and<br \/>perennials for those who come after them.<\/p>\n<p>Military Wives quickly learn to value each other.<\/p>\n<p>They connect over<br \/>coffee, rely on the spouse-network and accept offers of friendship<br \/>and favors and record addresses in pencil.<\/p>\n<p>Military Wives have a common bond.<\/p>\n<p>The Military Wife has a husband unlike other husbands his commitment<br \/>is unique He doesn&#8217;t have a job, he has a &#8220;mission&#8221; he can&#8217;t just<br \/>decide to quit he&#8217;s on-call for his country 24\/7 but for you, he&#8217;s<br \/>the most<\/p>\n<p>Unreliable guy in town!<\/p>\n<p>His language is foreign<\/p>\n<p>TDY<\/p>\n<p>PCS<\/p>\n<p>OPR<\/p>\n<p>ACC<\/p>\n<p>BDU<\/p>\n<p>And so, a Military Wife is a translator for her family and his.<\/p>\n<p>She is the long-distance link to keep them informed, the glue that<br \/>holds them together.<\/p>\n<p>Military Wife has her moments&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>She wants to wring his neck, dye his uniform pink, and refuse to<br \/>move to Siberia.<\/p>\n<p>But she pulls herself together.<\/p>\n<p>Give her a few days, a travel brochure, a long hot bath, a pledge to<br \/>the flag, and a wedding picture.<\/p>\n<p>And she goes.<\/p>\n<p>She packs.<\/p>\n<p>She moves.<\/p>\n<p>She follows.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<br \/>What for?<\/p>\n<p>How come?<\/p>\n<p>You may think it is because she has lost her mind.<\/p>\n<p>But actually it is because she has lost her heart.<\/p>\n<p>It was stolen from her by a man<\/p>\n<p>who puts duty first<\/p>\n<p>who longs to deploy<\/p>\n<p>who salutes the flag<\/p>\n<p>and whose boots in the doorway remind her that as long as he is her<br \/>Military husband,<\/p>\n<p>She will remain his Military wife.<br \/><span style=\"font-style: italic;\"><br \/>*Disclaimer: I&#8217;m not your normal military wife, since I&#8217;m still part-time military, sometimes my husband has to bear part of this burden.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was sent to me by an Air Force wife who&#8217;s soon leaving us for (I think) Florida.
