this Keurig Elite from the <a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/hurlburt-spouses-club-charity-auction.html\" target=\"_blank\">HSC Charity Auction last fall<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Like millions of other Americans, we have become Keurig customers. \u00a0It&#8217;s like a revolution in coffee&#8230;Keurigs give you a &#8220;perfect&#8221; cup of coffee with very little work. \u00a0The American dream, right?<\/p>\n<p>We got our first Keurig, a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003J8JP6U\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003J8JP6U\" target=\"_blank\">Mini<\/a>&#8220;, just before we moved from Nebraska to Florida in fall 2010. \u00a0After the movers took our regular coffee pot, it was a nice way to keep having our coffee in the morning. \u00a0It&#8217;s small and we didn&#8217;t have to keep coffee grounds on hand, just a box (or two) of K-Cups and some disposable coffee cups.\u00a0That one ended up in Dave&#8217;s office. \u00a0We like how it turns itself off after the cup of coffee brews. \u00a0We get a bit paranoid about coffee pots being left on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000AQPMHA\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000AQPMHA\" target=\"_blank\">This past fall we got one for the home<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s been great. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fatwallet.com\/forums\/hot-deals\/979949\/\" target=\"_blank\">When you register your machine with Keurig, you get coupons for free K-Cups<\/a>. \u00a0BOGO for 2 boxes of 48 K-Cups. \u00a0This was a great deal after Christmas when the Starbucks K-Cups became available online.<\/p>\n<p>K-Cup-brewed coffee is delicious and perfect every time. \u00a0No doubt there.<\/p>\n<p>My conundrum: K-Cups are very wasteful and are expensive. \u00a0After all, traditional coffee pots brew through compostable coffee filters and then you can go on to compost the spent coffee grounds.<!--more--><\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-7QXfuc4vm90\/T3cbAKU6cBI\/AAAAAAABh4g\/z8vNCar9oCE\/s1600\/IMG_2804.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-7QXfuc4vm90\/T3cbAKU6cBI\/AAAAAAABh4g\/z8vNCar9oCE\/s400\/IMG_2804.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">You can compost coffee grounds &#8212; and as a bonus, they also offset the odors in your compost pail.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>But with K-Cups, you&#8217;re dealing with a plastic cup that has a paper filter glued to the inside&#8230;all topped with a foil lid. \u00a0The very ambitious can peel off the foil lid and compost the meager amount of grounds inside.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-P-ANA9PStP0\/T3cbCex-paI\/AAAAAAABh4w\/tR6ljUeCIgM\/s1600\/IMG_2806.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-P-ANA9PStP0\/T3cbCex-paI\/AAAAAAABh4w\/tR6ljUeCIgM\/s400\/IMG_2806.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Not only do K-Cups generate a lot of waste, but they&#8217;re also expensive.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk about the cost. \u00a0Your typical box of 12 K-Cups will run $6-10. \u00a0Starbucks will cost more (because they can, people are buying them anyway). \u00a0The prices vary considerably, based on the brand of coffee and the number of K-Cups in the box. \u00a0It goes without saying that the large multi-packs will sell for less-per-cup.<\/p>\n<p>I often seek out the big deals for the cups: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keurig.com\/shop\/k-cups\/all-k-cups\" target=\"_blank\">Keurig&#8217;s own website<\/a> has good deals, military commissaries have the best non-sale prices around, and you can use the Bed, Bath and Beyond and Kohl&#8217;s coupons for some good deals also.<\/p>\n<p>My goal is to keep the costs under 50 cents per cup. \u00a0I&#8217;m usually pretty good about that, even with the Starbucks cups, which tend to run closer to 80 cents per cup.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided to try the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000DLB2FI\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000DLB2FI\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;My K-Cup&#8221; contraption<\/a>, which is found where Keurig machines are sold. \u00a0You remove the K-Cup holder from your machine and replace it with this grey cone, inside which you put a fine mesh filter with 1-2 Tbsp. of coffee grounds.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-x-wgPhKnz38\/T3ca7DrEQ5I\/AAAAAAABh4A\/igo5wvsIgLs\/s1600\/IMG_2800.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-x-wgPhKnz38\/T3ca7DrEQ5I\/AAAAAAABh4A\/igo5wvsIgLs\/s400\/IMG_2800.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>My first attempt at using this was a gi-nor-mous FAIL. \u00a0My first cup of coffee was super-weak, but when I added more grounds, the system overflowed and I got a countertop covered in hot water and loose coffee grounds. \u00a0I attempted to adjust the size of the grounds to make the coffee stronger&#8230;unfortunately, if the water flows too slowly through the filter, the machine will stop flowing water&#8230;and you end up with a smaller-than-planned cup of coffee.<\/p>\n<p>I asked friends on Facebook for advice &#8212; and received all sorts of ideas, which I&#8217;ve tried. \u00a0My Mom clued me into some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003KQ47P0\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003KQ47P0\" target=\"_blank\">replacement filter baskets<\/a> that are bigger than Keurig&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ARoD6oSyLB0\/T3ca8VEeoeI\/AAAAAAABh4I\/CAZkJj92wak\/s1600\/IMG_2801.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-ARoD6oSyLB0\/T3ca8VEeoeI\/AAAAAAABh4I\/CAZkJj92wak\/s400\/IMG_2801.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The BB&amp;B filter is on the right.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>This helped somewhat. \u00a0But the coffee was still weak.<\/p>\n<p>One of my Facebook friends told me about Keurig addressing the waste problem by launching a brand-spanking new coffee brewing system: The Vue Brewer. \u00a0Sounds promising&#8230;but&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"height: 240px; width: 120px;\" src=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?lt1=_blank&amp;bc1=000000&amp;IS2=1&amp;bg1=FFFFFF&amp;fc1=000000&amp;lc1=0000FF&amp;t=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;o=1&amp;p=8&amp;l=as4&amp;m=amazon&amp;f=ifr&amp;ref=ss_til&amp;asins=B007L877MI\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&#8230;what about the millions of us who have already invested in a coffee maker that only uses K-Cups? \u00a0I&#8217;m hoping for some backwards-compatibility here&#8230;Amazon has so many options out there to make your Keurig machine more efficient&#8230;let&#8217;s see what we have, shall we?<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"height: 240px; grey cone. \u00a0It was on its way to brewing a nice strong cup of coffee but then the water began to overflow around the filter. \u00a0Oops&#8230;another mess on my hands.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto;
