{"id":640,"date":"2011-08-26T13:14:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-26T13:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/08\/overnight-crock-pot-steel-cut-oats.html"},"modified":"2011-08-26T13:14:00","modified_gmt":"2011-08-26T13:14:00","slug":"overnight-crock-pot-steel-cut-oats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/08\/overnight-crock-pot-steel-cut-oats.html","title":{"rendered":"Overnight Crock Pot Steel-Cut Oats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodsubs.com\/Photos\/steelcutoats2.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"263\" src=\"http:\/\/www.foodsubs.com\/Photos\/steelcutoats2.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;m doing this for a contest at the <a href=\"http:\/\/crockpotrecipeexchange.blogspot.com\/2011\/08\/virtual-crock-pot-party.html\">Crock Pot Recipe Exchange blog<\/a>. &nbsp;It&#8217;s simple, but it&#8217;s sorta difficult to remember to set up breakfast the evening before.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steel-cut_oats\">&#8220;Real&#8221; oatmeal<\/a> is heaven if you prepare it correctly. &nbsp;If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with the different &#8220;cuts&#8221; of oatmeal, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chow.com\/food-news\/54417\/whats-the-difference-between-types-of-oatmeal\/\">here&#8217;s a nice primer for you<\/a>. &nbsp;My kids are partial to the Quaker instant packets, but to make a real bowl of oats, with real maple syrup and brown sugar&#8230;well, it&#8217;s so good for you! &nbsp;Being the impatient, hungry family we are, it&#8217;s tough having the hubby and kids wait 30-40 minutes for a pot of steel cut oats to cook on a Sunday morning. &nbsp;Especially now that we go to a church that&#8217;s 30 minutes away, and starts at 9:15am!<\/p>\n<p>If you can remember to do it ahead of time, I recommend using your Crock Pot to cook your steel-cut oats to perfection. &nbsp;Individual Crock Pots, locations, elevations and brands of oats (I use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0007KNXAC\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399373&amp;creativeASIN=B0007KNXAC\">Bob&#8217;s Red Mill<\/a>) will result in variations on the cooking times, but this has worked well enough for me. &nbsp;When I made it exactly as in the recipe linked below, it dried out&#8230;I think it cooked for too long. &nbsp;You could rehydrate it and salvage most of it, but it wasn&#8217;t the same as fresh-out-of-the-crock perfection.<\/p>\n<p><b>Overnight Crock Pot Steel Cut Oatmeal<\/b>, adapted from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/recipes\/alton-brown\/overnight-oatmeal-recipe\/index.html\">Alton Brown&#8217;s Recipe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>1 1\/2 c. steel cut oats<br \/>5 c. water<br \/>1-2 c. dried fruit, such as raisins or cranberries, as desired<\/p>\n<p>Cook in your Crock Pot on low for 6 hours. &nbsp;You can set this right when you go to bed, and it should still be warm by morning. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001CW9HCC\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399373&amp;creativeASIN=B001CW9HCC\">My own Crock Pot<\/a> has a &#8220;Keep Warm&#8221; function that it defaults to after the active cooking time is complete. &nbsp;At least, that&#8217;s the case in my house where we get 7-8 hours of sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy some REAL oatmeal this weekend!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m doing this for a contest at the Crock Pot Recipe Exchange blog. &nbsp;It&#8217;s simple, but it&#8217;s sorta difficult to remember to set up breakfast the evening before. &#8220;Real&#8221; oatmeal is heaven if you prepare it correctly. &nbsp;If you&#8217;re unfamiliar with the different &#8220;cuts&#8221; of oatmeal, here&#8217;s a nice primer for you. &nbsp;My kids are [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_is_tweetstorm":false,"jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true},"categories":[],"tags":[8],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p5ycQ0-ak","jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":268,"url":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2008\/11\/holiday-surprise-cookies.html","url_meta":{"origin":640,"position":0},"title":"Holiday Surprise Cookies","date":"15 November 08","format":false,"excerpt":"This is Patricia (don't let the Dr. Dave fool you).
