{"id":614,"date":"2011-07-14T01:07:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-14T01:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/07\/pandering-to-the-pond.html"},"modified":"2011-07-14T01:07:00","modified_gmt":"2011-07-14T01:07:00","slug":"pandering-to-the-pond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/07\/pandering-to-the-pond.html","title":{"rendered":"Pandering to the Pond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week I put away the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/kitchen%20laptop\">kitchen laptop<\/a>&#8221; once and for all. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/webcams\/vollmerdp\/1\/show.html\">We got our weather webcam working again<\/a> with Dave&#8217;s old PC laptop that had been sitting in our front office unused since we moved here.<\/p>\n<p>With no kitchen laptop to occupy my time reformatting and partitioning, I&#8217;ve taken on a new hopeless project. &nbsp;Wasn&#8217;t sure whether to call it my <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.answers.com\/Q\/What_does_'Waterloo'_mean_as_a_slang_or_idiomatic_expression\">Waterloo<\/a> or my <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Achilles%27_heel\">Achilles&#8217; heel<\/a> or what, but it&#8217;s effectively taken the place of the kitchen laptop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/murderess.html\">I&#8217;ve talked about the small pond in front my rental house before.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;It&#8217;s pretty, and the cascading fountain is really really cool. &nbsp;Most of the time my involvement with the pond isn&#8217;t the greatest. <\/p>\n<table align=\"center\" cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-GUT9zQS0JHA\/Th440jIpqoI\/AAAAAAABYAk\/00-tNOZd3EY\/s1600\/IMG_9088.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-GUT9zQS0JHA\/Th440jIpqoI\/AAAAAAABYAk\/00-tNOZd3EY\/s640\/IMG_9088.jpg\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align: center;\">The hose in the background is connected to our well pump, thus making it easy (and free-of-charge) to refill the pond with non-chlorinated water.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>It&#8217;s too small. &nbsp;I&#8217;m going to guess the homeowner doesn&#8217;t read this blog so I&#8217;ll just be honest here and declare that it&#8217;s almost inhumane to have tried to keep 4 large koi in that small space. &nbsp;I&#8217;d guess it&#8217;s about 55-60 gallons. &nbsp;Not enough for large goldfish.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been keeping notes of my &#8220;pond issues&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At first there was a lot of splashing out of those cascading trays and when the sprinklers weren&#8217;t running in the winter, I had to manually refill the pond almost daily. &nbsp;I recently rearranged the trays and virtually eliminated this problem.<\/li>\n<li>The hose that runs up the center of the fountain often slips and without warning the water isn&#8217;t cascading down the trays. &nbsp;I have to remove one of the trays to access the hose and thread it back up the center of the fountain. &nbsp;Darned gravity!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/murderess.html\">As I had written about this past spring<\/a>, I had killed all 4 of the original koi that were with the house when we moved here in December. &nbsp;So I had replaced those koi with 3 smaller ones. &nbsp;The day we left on vacation we had thunderstorms and the outdoor electrical circuit that includes the pond pump shorted out. &nbsp;Within 24 hours, those new koi were dead.<\/li>\n<li>The algae!!! &nbsp;Once the weather started warming up the amounts of algae have been very difficult to control. &nbsp;The pond is too small for a UV filter, which probably would solve all of our problems, so I&#8217;m trying humane methods to control the algae: barley straw packets and manual water changes.<\/li>\n<li>There is a frog that lives in or near the pond. &nbsp;He&#8217;s really loud. &nbsp;My neighbors send me Facebook wall posts, he&#8217;s so loud.<\/li>\n<li>Or shall I say&#8230;&#8221;She?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-uLxU7x1TOgI\/Th44sr3JyUI\/AAAAAAABYAU\/PNcD8wrWWZM\/s1600\/IMG_9084.JPG\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-uLxU7x1TOgI\/Th44sr3JyUI\/AAAAAAABYAU\/PNcD8wrWWZM\/s640\/IMG_9084.JPG\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Meet Mr. Tadpole, one of about a dozen living in the pond now! &nbsp;Perhaps this picture is difficult to see? &nbsp;I brought 3 of the tadpoles into the house to show to the boys.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-yq9bHID1W18\/Th44U7ME8yI\/AAAAAAABYA4\/O00jsQAF1ZM\/s1600\/IMG_9071.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-yq9bHID1W18\/Th44U7ME8yI\/AAAAAAABYA4\/O00jsQAF1ZM\/s640\/IMG_9071.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>So I now have 3 tadpoles in the kitchen swimming in a Pyrex glass and I&#8217;m not sure what to do with them. &nbsp;I&#8217;m considering setting up a <a href=\"http:\/\/animal.discovery.com\/videos\/backyard-habitat-make-a-tadpole-aquarium.html\">small habitat<\/a> and seeing if we can see the development over the next few weeks&#8230;a cool summer science project, right?
