{"id":503,"date":"2011-01-09T21:18:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-09T21:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/01\/the-return-of-runner-girl.html"},"modified":"2011-01-09T21:18:00","modified_gmt":"2011-01-09T21:18:00","slug":"the-return-of-runner-girl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2011\/01\/the-return-of-runner-girl.html","title":{"rendered":"The Return of Runner Girl?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s what I&#8217;d like to think&#8230; \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.runnergirl.com\/images\/oval_sticker_rlag.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"205\" src=\"http:\/\/www.runnergirl.com\/images\/oval_sticker_rlag.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/but-no-one-is-chasing-you.html\">Especially before we had kids, Dave and I enjoyed long-distance running.<\/a><br \/><img alt=\"\" border=\"0\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154308819324942258\" src=\"http:\/\/bp2.blogger.com\/_yz59FVsseJY\/R4fIj_6Gt7I\/AAAAAAAAKkk\/jt7TabiG2zA\/s320\/marathon6mile.jpg\" style=\"cursor: hand; display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, our training dwindled some after the kids arrived, and between Dave and me and our double-jogging stroller, we&#8217;d always managed 1-2 races per year even after the kids were born. &nbsp;Then we hit a lazy streak in Nebraska, Dave&#8217;s job was really busy, the weather was a pain-in-the-rear (I hate running in the wind!), and Dave had several medical issues that all combined to keep us from do any more working out than necessary.<\/p>\n<p>After a couple years of lollygagging, I took the plunge and signed up for my first running race since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beginnertriathlete.com\/discussion\/forums\/thread-view.asp?tid=117635&amp;mid=1442856\">June 2009<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Which race? &nbsp;No, of course I don&#8217;t go easy and sign up for a 5K. &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.doublebridgerun.com\/DBRHomeWide.cfm\">Here is the race I registered for<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.active.com\/images\/upimages\/dbr11.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.active.com\/images\/upimages\/dbr11.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I think I tend to gravitate towards the more scenic races. &nbsp;Check out the course map! &nbsp;Isn&#8217;t it beautiful??? &nbsp;I&#8217;m excited to get to see sunrise over those bridges!<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_yz59FVsseJY\/TSobCN7WmbI\/AAAAAAABPaQ\/4w3f7xpeHs8\/s1600\/15Kmap.jpg\" imageanchor=\"1\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"640\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/_yz59FVsseJY\/TSobCN7WmbI\/AAAAAAABPaQ\/4w3f7xpeHs8\/s640\/15Kmap.jpg\" width=\"492\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">So part of my motivation for this is to to get fit again. &nbsp;Not sure if it was stress, laziness, just plain overeating or what, I&#8217;m currently about 15-20 lbs. heavier than when I came home from my deployment in April 2009. &nbsp;I need a goal, and a plan to reach that goal.<\/div>\n<p>Hence signing up for a 15K race right off the bat. &nbsp;This spring I&#8217;d like to do a 1\/2 marathon, I&#8217;ll wait to sign up until we see whether I can do this 15K okay. <\/p>\n<p>First off, I was in desperate need of new running shoes. &nbsp;I was in the same old Brooks shoes I&#8217;d had since Spring 2009. &nbsp;Spare me the lectures, I know one should be replace them every 500 miles or so. &nbsp;So with one of the gift cards I&#8217;d received for Christmas (thanks Mom and Dad Vollmer!), I got a nice pair of trail running shoes. &nbsp;I prefer trail running shoes for the broader, thicker soles.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: auto;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/lh\/photo\/qpVAgSFafJZtOphZZDRUSg?feat=embedwebsite\"><img loading=\"lazy\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_yz59FVsseJY\/TSodZreXwnI\/AAAAAAABPag\/MgKWdb9rebA\/s400\/IMG_4044.JPG\" width=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11px; text-align: right;\">From <a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/vollmerdp\/20110106NavarreBeachBridgeRun?feat=embedwebsite\">2011 01 06 Navarre Beach Bridge Run<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I started my &#8220;training&#8221; in earnest this week, which meant increasing how many miles I run each week. &nbsp;Normally I do three 5K runs per week, but now I need to do at least 4 runs per week, and at least 15 miles total per week, slowly increasing that up to about 20 miles per week. &nbsp;I&#8217;d like to do 5 runs per week but real life might make that a less-realistic goal. &nbsp;Included in that is one &#8220;long run&#8221;, which needs to increase by 1 to 1.5 miles per week, hopefully I can do that on Fridays.<\/p>\n<p>Our neighborhood is expansive enough I can plan lots of great routes or any length I need! &nbsp;Not sure if it&#8217;s old age or the extra weight I&#8217;m carrying around, but I hope this isn&#8217;t a permanent issue or else long distance runs won&#8217;t last very long in my future.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I&#8217;ve noticed over the years that my legs, knees and hips are now more sensitive to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cant_(road\/rail)\">cant<\/a> of the road. &nbsp;My neighborhood doesn&#8217;t have sidewalks, so I&#8217;m on the far left or right edges of the road surfaces, and if there&#8217;s a slope for too long, I feel it in the arches of my feet and in my hips.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s hoping I stick to this fitness plan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s what I&#8217;d like to think&#8230; \ud83d\ude42 Especially before we had kids, Dave and I enjoyed long-distance running.
