{"id":471,"date":"2010-10-07T01:35:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-07T01:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2010\/10\/nebraska-discoveries-9-runza.html"},"modified":"2012-05-20T20:11:25","modified_gmt":"2012-05-21T01:11:25","slug":"nebraska-discoveries-9-runza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2010\/10\/nebraska-discoveries-9-runza.html","title":{"rendered":"Nebraska Discoveries 20: Runza"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/f\/fa\/Runzalogo.png\"><img src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/f\/fa\/Runzalogo.png\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<p>Tonight for dinner, we went out. \u00a0It tends to be a necessity 1-2 times per week in the fall while the boys are in soccer 5-days per week (Jacob 3 days, Timmy 2). \u00a0I do what I can to cook but it&#8217;s rather aggressive; when I do cook I try to get the dinner on the table at 5:30pm, the boys have to be finished with dinner by about 5:50pm.<\/p>\n<p>I asked the boys &#8220;Where would you like to go?&#8221; \u00a0We have several choices between our house and Jacob&#8217;s practice field. \u00a0I had suggested a family favorite, <a href=\"http:\/\/jimmyjohns.com\/\">Jimmy John&#8217;s,<\/a> but Jacob had a roast beef sandwich for lunch and said he didn&#8217;t want another one for dinner. \u00a0Since roast beef is the only kind of deli meat he eats. \u00a0Sigh&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We ended up at a local restaurant called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.runza.com\/\">&#8220;Runza&#8221;<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a chain throughout Nebraska (the first one opening in Lincoln, NE in 1949), with a couple of additional stores in Iowa, Kansas and Colorado. \u00a0It&#8217;s quite good, a fun fast food alternative to your typical hamburger joint. \u00a0Definitely not the healthiest option, so we&#8217;ll go there 3-4 times per year. \u00a0Jacob LOVES Runza sandwiches! \u00a0The kids&#8217; meal isn&#8217;t enough now, we get him an adult-sized combo meal!<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, they also sell hamburgers so Timmy doesn&#8217;t mind going either.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;what&#8217;s so great about this Runza place? \u00a0Well, Runza restaurants feature these unique sandwiches: a seasoned blend of ground beef, onion and cabbage sealed in a special bread. \u00a0Cheese optional.<\/p>\n<p>Today I made a cool &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/vollmerdp.blogspot.com\/search?q=nebraska+discoveries\">Nebraska Discovery<\/a>&#8220;. \u00a0Runza is not only the name of this restaurant chain, but it&#8217;s also the name of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Runza\">the sandwich featured there<\/a>. \u00a0It came to the Americas via &#8220;Volga German&#8221; immigrants. \u00a0If you do a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikipedia<\/a> search for &#8220;Runza&#8221;, you&#8217;re presented a choice: Do you want to learn about the sandwich itself, or the restaurant chain with the same name?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to regurgitate what you guys could click on and read for yourselves regarding the history, but I thought it was pretty darned cool.<\/p>\n<p>PS: Our local Runza puts a package of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sillybandz.com\/\">Silly Bandz<\/a>-like bracelets in the Kids&#8217; Meals!
