No turning back now! This is after the primer only. The real paint goes on tomorrow.<\/p><\/div>\n

This weekend we are painting the cabinets. This is a much larger undertaking than the island we did last month<\/a>. Instead of just the four doors we had to disassemble for the island, today we took down 28 doors!<\/p>\n

Taking down and preparing the doors took a couple hours alone because we had to be sure to catalog them properly. Let’s talk about how it was done.<\/p>\n

For each door we removed, we gave it a number. For the hinged doors, we indicated which direction the doors were installed. We covered the markings with masking tape so it wouldn’t get painted over.<\/p><\/div>\n

We marked where each door goes somewhere on the cabinet boxes. Then we removed the hinges.<\/p><\/div>\n

All the hinge parts went into zip-top bags.<\/p><\/div>\n

Here are some doors ready to be washed and deglossed.<\/p><\/div>\n

The next step is to thoroughly clean the surfaces.<\/p>\n

I have to admit I haven’t been as good as I should be about keeping the cabinet doors clean. Once a year or so I’ll give wooden\u00a0doors a once-over with either Murphy’s Oil Soap or some sort of orange oil. That usually does the trick but So the top-most edges of some\u00a0of the less-used cabinet doors were VERY dirty, perhaps with 17 years worth of dirt and grime?<\/p>\n

Each of the doors were washed in trisodium phosphate (TSP) and then wiped down with sander deglosser. There was so much dirt on those doors!<\/p>\n

The doors were\u00a0arranged in the garage to be\u00a0painted with a sprayer.<\/p>\n

While Dave was working on the doors in the garage, I was busy priming the cabinet boxes and baseboards.<\/p>\n
