{"id":3692,"date":"2015-04-25T00:08:54","date_gmt":"2015-04-25T05:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/?p=3692"},"modified":"2015-04-25T00:08:54","modified_gmt":"2015-04-25T05:08:54","slug":"diy-kitchen-transformation-prep-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2015\/04\/diy-kitchen-transformation-prep-work.html","title":{"rendered":"DIY Kitchen Transformation: The Importance of Thorough Prep Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3693\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_1266.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3693\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3693\" src=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_1266-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The prep work we did wasn't good enough...\" width=\"630\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_1266-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_1266-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The prep work we did last night wasn&#8217;t good enough&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We had a pretty substantial setback today on our journey to (like) new cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>Dave and I had read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uglyducklinghouse.com\/kitchen-cabinet-paint-prep\/\">plenty of DIY tips<\/a> suggesting that if one&#8217;s stained and sealed cabinets are old enough, a simple chemical treatment with a &#8220;sander deglosser&#8221; is all we would need before applying the primer, then paint.<\/p>\n<p>Boy were we wrong!<\/p>\n<p>Last night we had applied two coats of Kilz primer to the island and cabinet doors, and this evening, as Dave\u00a0took a sanding block to some of the drips from last night&#8217;s work, large pieces of the primer came right off!<\/p>\n<p>It turned out the <a href=\"ttp:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B006ZJHOCC\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B006ZJHOCC&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkId=FBYSZJGBUNGJX44T\">deglosser<\/a> didn&#8217;t do jack.<\/p>\n<p>So tonight we had to break out the big guns: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B0001GOGQW\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0001GOGQW&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkId=EFZWMR5VYNL7M7U3\">trisodium phosphate (TSP)<\/a> and an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00MLSS1SW\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00MLSS1SW&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkId=PRQC2KDZXJVW75RP\">orbiter sander<\/a>\u00a0to get all of the original primer off. It isn&#8217;t pretty. We will also be switching the primer to a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000H5VKBQ\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B000H5VKBQ&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=grocontomaj0c-20&amp;linkId=EQZTX3YXDNVWFGQC\">bonding primer<\/a>&#8220;.
