{"id":3231,"date":"2014-07-12T00:35:37","date_gmt":"2014-07-12T05:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/?p=3231"},"modified":"2014-08-15T23:15:08","modified_gmt":"2014-08-16T04:15:08","slug":"meet-ranger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2014\/07\/meet-ranger.html","title":{"rendered":"Meet Ranger, Our New Family Member!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_3290\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0017.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3290\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3290\" src=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0017-1024x678.jpg\" alt=\"Meet Ranger!\" width=\"630\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0017-1024x678.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/DSC_0017-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 630px) 100vw, 630px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3290\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meet Ranger!<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">I have a solid 6 weeks worth of adventures to write about, but for now, meet\u00a0Ranger, the newest member of the family (pictured here).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been about 3 months since we lost our beloved <a href=\"http:\/\/thevollmerfamily.com\/MajorMom\/2014\/04\/howie-2000-2014.html\">Howie<\/a>, and the house just isn&#8217;t the same without a four-legged friend to keep us company.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s a ~2 year old smooth-coat <a href=\"http:\/\/dogtime.com\/dog-breeds\/border-collie\">border collie<\/a>, and he&#8217;s so smart! He was found as a stray in Garden City, KS and was rescued from a rural Kansas shelter in mid-June. He had been fostering with a Denver family through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westernaustralianshepherdrescue.com\/\">Western Australian Shepherd Rescue<\/a> since then.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\"><!--more-->He&#8217;s incredibly obedient, almost to a fault. We have a lot of work to teach Ranger what&#8217;s okay (peeing outside) and what&#8217;s not okay (peeing on LEGOs). Tonight we had to quickly correct him from running outside, and then almost peeing on a pile of LEGO bricks&#8230;when we say &#8220;No, Ranger!&#8221; he pretty much shuts down for a few minutes, perhaps out of remorse?<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">He seems much more of an outdoor dog than Howie ever was; this weekend we are planning to install a doggie door on the basement sliding door so he can travel in and out as he wants. He&#8217;s old enough that it should be okay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">He was almost skin and bones when he was rescued, so he&#8217;s still on the skinny side. He should be between 40-50 lbs but probably is 35-40 right now. We will be working on his putting on weight over the next several weeks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">Because I&#8217;m now working full time (that&#8217;s for another post), we were constrained to looking for an older pet who could be home alone for longer periods of time than a puppy. This is where rescue organizations come in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #141823;\">The kids think he&#8217;s great! They haven&#8217;t seen &#8220;rambunctious Howie&#8221; since they were really little, so Ranger&#8217;s energy levels will take a little getting used to.<\/p>\n<p>We are grateful to the Western Australian Shepherd Rescue for giving us the opportunity to provide Ranger his &#8220;forever home&#8221;.
